Case Study: Turnkey Wash Bay and Wastewater Treatment Solution for Industrial Crane Company
The Problem
Background
New location, same challenge: keeping equipment clean on-site with minimal downtime. Our client, a top industrial crane company, needed a robust washpad and biosystem to handle heavy-duty cleaning operations for their new facility. They turned to Evans Equipment and Environmental for a complete, turnkey solution: custom wash bay design, build, installation, and maintenance, plus an advanced wastewater treatment system.
Project Overview
As Evans developed a comprehensive wash bay and wastewater treatment system for the crane company’s new facility, our goal was clear:
- Handle heavy solids
- Manage wastewater efficiently
- Meet environmental standards
We achieved this by integrating a custom-designed slope drive-in pit to capture settled solids that worked in tandem with our sophisticated biosystem for optimal performance. While common within industrial settings, this wasn’t just any standard wash bay, it was tailored to address the specific needs of our client while ensuring environmental compliance.
The Solution
At Evans, we provide an end-to-end wastewater treatment solution. That means we are your one stop shop for turnkey wash bays and wastewater management systems. With this custom wash bay, we designed and installed a system with an enhanced slope drive-in pit with advanced water recycling and waste management features, ensuring top-notch operational efficiency and full environmental compliance.
Specifics:
- Dimensions: Wash Bay 35’ x 65’; Wash Area: 35’ x 44’
- Pit Design: 5’ deep settlement pit with three settling compartments
- Water Management: Multiple pits for solid settlement, with mechanical float and pump system
- Separator: Above-ground separator for oil capture and solid settlement
- Biosystem:
- Three 600-gallon reactor tanks
- Aeration tubes and coagulation for solid clumping
- Genetically engineered microbes for grease and hydrocarbon consumption
The slope drive-in pit is really what sets this project apart. It lets vehicles and equipment enter at an angle, streamlining the collection of wash water and heavy solids. Then, the slope channels water and debris toward a collection area, keeping the wash bay floor clear.
Wastewater Treatment System
Our biosystem integrates seamlessly with the wash pad to ensure environmental compliance through advanced water recycling and waste management.
During the wash process, water and debris collect in an initial pit. As the vehicles progress through the wash basin, the amount of solid debris collected in each pit decreases. The final pit features a mechanical float system that pumps water into an above ground underwater separator. This separator captures floating oil and settles out solids by directing water through multiple compartments. Captured oil is then removed by the customer.
Next, the water flows into three 600-gallon reactor tanks, where aeration tubes supply oxygen, and coagulate is injected to help suspended solids clump together and settle. This is where the Evans Bio System (EBS) comes into play. The EBS contains live microbes, which are genetically engineered to rapidly degrade organic contaminants such as oil, grease, diesel, and drilling mud and convert these contaminants into water and carbon dioxide. These microbes thrive in the oxygen-rich environment, growing and replenishing themselves as they break down contaminants.
The system operates in a mostly closed-loop manner, with treated water held in a 300-gallon tank. With any of the treatment options we offer, you can either discharge the treated water through a sewer or other environmentally compliant location, install a system to evaporate excess water, or recycle the water. While discharging the water is less maintenance-intensive, recycling provides a more sustainable solution with lower liability.
The Process
Installation
The installation went smoothly and was well-coordinated with the general contractor for electrical and plumbing work despite some weather-related delays. While building construction extended the project timeline beyond the usual 2-4 months, our team at Evans expertly handled all aspects of the wash bay installation with minimal disruption. We maintained clear internal communications through weekly meetings and provided regular updates to the client and external partners. We understand how important it is to integrate detailed planning to ensure smooth coordination and a successful project.
Maintenance
The wash bay and wastewater treatment system are user-friendly, but they do require regular maintenance. This includes removing solids, checking and cleaning filters, and ensuring that the chemical coagulate and microbe levels are satisfactory. Due to evaporation, the system may require water to be added on occasion. Ideally, the water should be hauled off approximately once a year. This proactive approach ensures the system remains functional and efficient.
Every three months, an Evans technician will come to the site and perform detailed checks – voltage, pH, pump packing, output pressure, and temperature – along with other scheduled maintenance and repairs. Our skilled technicians provide extensive services to minimize downtime and extend the life of your equipment. With our local service centers for prompt support and a responsive service team for quick breakdown repairs, we keep your operations running smoothly. For expert advice, our technical support team is just a phone call away.
