Washing Your Equipment: What You Need to Know

If you were looking at a priority list for “How to Properly Care for Industrial Equipment,” washing your equipment would be at the top. Why?

The washing and cleaning of your equipment is required to ensure your equipment’s:

  1. Performance
  2. Appearance
  3. Overall life span

If the cleaning process is not done regularly or with attention to detail, the three categories above will be negatively impacted. The equipment will not look presentable and will eventually not operate efficiently, thus reducing its life span.

At a minimum, the washing and cleaning of your equipment should be a part of the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance, and especially after each period of use.

The Washing Process

When industrial equipment is in use, heavy solids, grease, and oil accumulate on the surface. These contaminants are eliminated during the washing process. The wash should include a high pressure, hot water wash with a suitable detergent.

The standard is a hot water, high pressure washer at 4, 6, 8 or 10 gallons per minute. In the case of a presence of heavy solids, it is beneficial to use a lower pressure, high volume unit capable of washing at a volume of up to 70 gallons per minute.

The cleaning process is a high priority and must be planned for and executed on a regular basis. The bottom line is that your equipment must be clean and ready to use when your customer needs it.

Be sure to include washing and cleaning in the routine maintenance of your equipment to keep it looking professional, functioning properly and to ensure its longevity.
